DigiBC Summer BBQ
On July 12 DigiBC hosted a summer BBQ event at EA’s Burnaby studio. DigiBC is a non-profit organization based in Vancouver with the mission to promote, support and accelerate the growth of BC’s digital media and wireless industry.
The event provided a great opportunity for the Aequilibrium team to engage with the Digital & Tech community, including founders, executives, students and industry supports. EA, Microsoft, Vanedge Capital, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Plentyoffish, and Nokia were some of the companies who attended the event.
At the event I talked to a number of people, some that I knew already (such as Amanda du Toit) and some that I met for the first time, including an indie game producer and former EA employee and a couple of Account Executives from S.I.Systems.
One of the VIPs I got to chat with is Paul Lee – former President of Electronic Arts. I know Paul from my days at EA, when I was a Development Director on the Fusion team, the EA division building games for Mobile Devices. Paul is now with Vanedge Capital. I also had the pleasure to chat with Howard Donaldson, the President for DigiBC. Howard is another EA alumni – he used to be VP and CFO for EA Canada.
The weather was great, the food was good, and we also enjoyed live entertainment. Since the music was blasting too loud to have a conversation while eating outdoors, I decided to head-out and tour the Motion Capture Studio – a world leading innovation facility with 118 optical motion capture cameras. That’s where I met Nigel Nunn, a capture System Specialist, and I actually sat inside the mobile 3D likeness capture stage for a wireless 4D facial performance capture – hope Nigel will send me a copy of the 3D facial video.
The event ended with a draw of the business cards – several lucky attendees won prizes from companies such as EA and Car2Go.
I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to organizing this great event: the organizers Whitney Donaldson @WhitDonaldson and Carly Graham @carlycgraham, the sponsors MediaScreen 2012, Nordicity, Kubera, Corporate Recruiters, and Uber (who provided free limo rides to and from the event).
